SANFORD — The members of Rolling Thunder Maine conducted their fifth annual POW-MIA Remembrance Day ceremony at Central Park on Main Street on Saturday, Sept. 19.
The organization held the event in cooperation with the Sanford-Springvale Veterans Memorial Committee.
Central Park was decorated with many American flags for the occasion. A symbolic cage, reminiscent of the kind of ones in which American prisoners of war and those missing in action were held captive, stood on the northern end of the park. To the right of the cage was the Fallen Soldier Display, which featured an inverted rifle that signaled a time of prayer and offered a break in the action to pay tribute to fallen soldiers. The display also showed boots that represented the final march of the last battle for the fallen soldier. A "POW Missing Man Table" was also set up next to the display to show various items with special meanings.
