When a motorcycle organization decided it wanted to conduct a major safety campaign in the wake of a fatal accident, city officials pointed its members toward the "community promotions" fund of the Casper City Council. Wyoming Central ABATE applied for $30,000 to launch a media campaign to raise motorcycle awareness among Casper motorists.
Last week, the council rejected the group's bid when it could only get four of the nine members to vote for it. But that doesn't mean it wasn't a good idea. The proposed campaign simply didn't meet the council's goal for the money, which is to bring people to the city.
We encourage Wyoming Central ABATE to keep trying to raise the money through the council and other sources. In fact, at least two members of the council who voted against the idea said they would support it if it came from a different pot of money available to the city. No one spoke against the actual proposal, only the funding source.
