The city of Sturgis and the Sturgis motorcycle rally will be the new permanent home for the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building, according to a news release.
South Dakota - The 2007 championship event will be held in Sturgis Aug. 5-8 at a 4.5-acre lot on the west edge of Lynn's DakotaMart on Lazelle Street. The location, now called Champions Park, is the new and permanent home of the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building. The Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building made its debut in California in 2004. The event was originated by American Motorcycle Dealer magazine. Organizers since have been looking for a permanent home for the custom bike event, which was held at the Thunder Road facility on the outskirts of Sturgis in 2006. Last fall, AMD magazine, the city of Sturgis and Sturgis Events LLC, the company that manages the lot on the west edge of Lynn's DakotaMart, began negotiations that resulted in Champions Park, according to the news release. Backers say the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building is the premier showcase of custom motorcycle design and engineering excellence. Among those who have featured prominently in the event in years past have been Jesse Jurrens and Michael Prugh of Independent Cycle in Rapid City (second in 2004 and 2005), and Mitchell's Brian Klock (Klock Werks Custom Cycle). "For us, the move to Sturgis was a logical one," said Robin Bradley, World Championship owner and organizer. "We set our sights on being able to eventually establish the event in Sturgis several years ago, and we're delighted at the welcome we have been given by the city and Sturgis Events LLC." Bradley's international motorcycle magazine publishing business is also working closely with Sturgis Industrial Expansion Corp. to help develop motorcycle industry investment in Sturgis and the region on a year-round basis. Bradley has chosen Sturgis as the home for the new U.S. company that he is establishing for the further development of the Official World Championship.
