The VOM is a great tool to check things out. I firmly feel that knowing when the bike quits charging will help you to get off the road safely, before the battery goes to low and makes the bike stop. Two different tools, each with a different purpose. The voltage gauge in then dash saved me last weekend when the regulator, just up and quit. Because I saw it quickly. If I had not had the fairing on with the gauge (red light would have told me the same thing)in it, I would not have seen it or known about it until the bike started acting up.. and then it would have been harder to get the bike home. The VOM, was very useful in determining whether it was the regulator or the stator. Stator checked out fine, so I installed another regulator and was off again without loosing all afternoon riding..

Yes, Wrecker, Fatback was a happy man that you found the alt wiring plug pulled out that morning. He still brags about you helping him out...

Not to mention, we were deep in between to mountains. No one out of the few of us who stayed behind had any signal to call anyone for help.

You really bailed us out Rex.

Just goes to show how good the rules we made work!

I split the good discussion part out and placed it here for further input and constructive discussion.

I like the idea but not how it works. I could be wrong, but just telling you the voltage is low, dont mean as much as telling me the charging system is out. Now if a light came on when the V/R went below a point and a different color if overcharging and one fore normal charging. Hmmmmm. Looks like I'm off to radio shack.

It would stand to reason that if the voltage dropped, the charging system is gone out, and that is what I want to know. If you really want to be able to watch it, put a voltage gauge on it and you will be able to detect overcharge as well..

Loss of charge is the part that is going to happen 98% of the time. Overcharge is only going to happen about 2%... With that said, the simple unit that Fubar posted about is allot better than nothing like the bike comes from the factory with... IMHO...
